Renaud Gaudron, cabinetmaker to the Crown from 1686.
Renaud Gaudron, born around 1653, succeeded his father Aubertin Gaudron, a cabinetmaker and contemporary of Pierre Gole, who was the official joiner to the household and residence of the Duchess of Orléans, as well as a supplier from 1672 to the household of the Palatine, Monsieur’s second wife, until her death in 1684. It was in his father’s workshop that Renaud served his apprenticeship and was recognised as a master before 1684. On his father’s death, his mother transferred to him the post of official joiner to the Duchess of Orléans, which had previously belonged to his father. Following the death of Pierre Gole in 1684, he was, for twenty-seven years, virtually the sole supplier of cabinetwork to the Crown’s Furniture Store. A total of 412 pieces of furniture were delivered between 8 June 1686 and 1713. When Renaud Gaudron died in 1727 on Rue de Richelieu, he was living on a pension and was described as ‘an official of the late Her Highness Madame’. His private clients included the Marquise de Seignelay at the Château de Sceaux, the Duchess of Portsmouth and Michel de Chamillart.
