Our painting illustrates an episode from the War of Devolution (1667- 1668), accurately documenting the tactical reality of the sieges carried out by the French army in Flanders.
This composition served as the matrix for the History of the King hanging at the Manufacture des Gobelins, which adapted the scene, dramatising it and transforming it into a monumental propaganda tool.
