Description
ADAM FRANS VAN DER MEULEN (1632-1690), ATTRIBUTED TO Louis XIV in Douai during the War of Devolution (1667-1668) Canvas. 51 x 80,5 cm. Carved oak frame, pink and gold lacquered. Label on the reverse "ce tableau... van der Meulen... n°199 du catal...". Our painting illustrates an episode from the War of Devolution (1667- 1668), accurately documenting the tactical reality of the sieges carried out by the French army in Flanders. This composition served as the matrix for the History of the King hanging at the Manufacture des Gobelins, which adapted the scene, dramatising it and transforming it into a monumental propaganda tool. The transition from painting to weaving thus marks the transition from a topographical survey of the terrain to a heroic celebration of the glory of Louis XIV.
