Jean Louis DUCIS (1775–1847), ‘Portrait of a Young Woman’, oil on canvas, Belot gallery stamp, signed lower right, 65 x 55 cm. (restored).
Jean-Louis Ducis was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David; he was also the nephew of the playwright Jean François Ducis and married the sister of the famous actor François Joseph Talma. His work focused primarily on portraiture and scenes of troubadours. He enjoyed a close friendship with the painter François Gérard, copying several of his paintings. Ducis also produced official portraits during the Empire and the Restoration.
