The portrait of the woman is inscribed: ‘Holbein fecit’ and dated ‘1640’, whilst the portrait of the man is dated ‘1640’.

A double portrait of a married couple by Conrad Meyer (1618–1689), in which the wife wears the same distinctive headdress, known as a ‘Hinterfür’, is held at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich (inv. IN-6961.1–3).
