Description
FRENCH SCHOOL, c. 1700, a follower of Pierre GOBERT Presumed portrait of Princess Thérèse Cunégonde Sobieska (1676–1730) Oil on canvas, oval format. 40.7 x 33 cm Although the face is idealised, this portrait bears a striking resemblance to the portrait of Thérèse Cunégonde Sobieska (1676–1730) held at the Museum of King John III’s Palace in Warsaw (inv. Wil.1585). The only surviving daughter of John III Sobieski, King of Poland, and Marie-Casimire-Louise de La Grange d’Arquien, Thérèse married Maximilian Emmanuel of Bavaria, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and Elector of Bavaria. Following the Battle of Ramillies on 23 May 1706, Maximilian Emmanuel and his wife were forced to flee the Spanish Netherlands and found refuge at the court of Versailles.
