Description
Wool and silk tapestry. An allegory of the Moon associated with the astrological sign of Scorpio (October–November) on a blue background decorated with grotesques. Border adorned with cartouches depicting sheep shearing, fishing scenes, fruit and drapery. Audenarde, c. 1560. Height: 330 cm – Width: 251 cm This tapestry forms part of a series dedicated to the seven planetary deities: Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, the Moon and the Sun. This identification of the planets with deities has its origins in ancient Greece. A significant series of tapestries from a very similar set, depicting five of the seven deities, can be seen at Chastelton House, Oxfordshire (UK). Many painters from the Netherlands, influenced by their stays in Rome, drew inspiration from the grotesques of Raphael and Giovanni da Udine: Hans Vredeman de Vries, Cornelius Metsys and Hans Floris, representing this movement which was then termed the ‘New Genre’. One of them may well be the creator of our ‘Allegory’. At the same time, Brussels produced very similar tapestries, including: ‘Grotesque with Monkeys’ by Hans de Vries [Catalogue of Tapices del Patrimonio Nacional (Spain). Vol. 1: p. 214 ff. 16th century. Editorial Patrimonio Nacional. 1986.] – Expert: IEP CONSEIL
