Description
Tenier tapestry in wool and silk. The Village Doctor Borders imitating a frame decorated with twisted motifs, acanthus leaves, foliage and shells. Height: 267 cm – Width: 206 cm Lille, which became part of France under the Treaty of Aix in 1668, attracted the Brussels tapestry weaver Jean de Melter, who was active there from 1688 onwards. Guillaume Werniers, his son-in-law, took over the business in 1700. Following the Brussels model, he produced numerous ‘Ténières’ based on the paintings of David Terniers II, known as ‘Le Jeune’. On Guillaume’s death in 1738, his widow, Catherine Ghuys, continued to run the workshop until 1778, signing her work ‘Vve. Werniers’. She continued to use the frame border found on our example, enabling us to date it to the very end of Guillaume Werniers’s production. – Expert: IEP CONSEIL
