Description
GUERET JEUNE An exceptional, mid-height ceremonial table in richly carved wood; the star-shaped base is centred on a fluted baluster shaft flanked by scrollwork adorned with fruit, including grapes and pomegranates, the arms supporting fluted baluster columns crowned with Ionic capitals and ending in substantial claw feet encircling spheres. Bears a stamp reading ‘GUERET JEUNE & Cie Srs Re LAFAYETTE 216 PARIS’ on the edge of the base’s top and an ink mark on the base’s top. The unsigned top is probably a later addition. The base is covered with a chalk-based paint finish. 64 x 118 x 118 cm GUERET JEUNES et Cie was the successor to the firm GUERET FRERES when Julien AIME, the youngest of the founding brothers, took over the family business around 1875–1877, just before the 1878 Paris World’s Fair, in which he participated under this name.
