Description
The Death of Rostam, Iran, in the Mo’in-e Mosavver style, probably 18th century
An illustration in gouache and gold, cut from a leaf of a manuscript of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh on paper; remnants of text appear at the bottom of the image, written in five columns in Persian Nasta’liq script in black ink within reserved areas on a gold background. The image depicts the death of the hero Rostam, recognisable by his cat-headed headdress, surrounded by people lamenting over his remains. On the reverse, the text is arranged around a title in red ink within a cartouche referring to the vengeance of Faramarz, son of the late Rostam, against the King of Kabul. Frame.
15 x 12 cm
Fading of colour, small tears, stains and creases, minor retouching and the illumination, which was likely added at a later date.
