Description
Rajasthan, northern India An important *pichway* or *picchavai* votive painting of Shrinathji, a form of Krishna worshipped at the Nathdwara temple in Rajasthan, celebrated in the autumn during the full moon. The deity, recognisable by his blue skin and youthful features, is surrounded by gopis, the cowherd girls devoted to Krishna. A herd of cows is tended by two gopas in the lower register. In the upper register, a procession of Hindu deities—Shiva, Brahma, Indra and their consorts—seated in their celestial chariots, witness the scene. Early 20th century H.: 119 cm; W.: 90 cm
