Jacques-Antoine Vallin (1760–1831), "Venus Holding Cupid Whilst Bathing" –

Jacques-Antoine Vallin, who was the son of a sculptor and engraver from the Quai de la Mégisserie, entered the Royal Academy of Painting in 1779 under the patronage of the history painter Gabriel Doyen; there he was also a pupil of Antoine-François Callet and Antoine Renou (1731–1806). He is known as an elegant specialist in depictions of bathers, nymphs and other more or less nude bacchantes, and mythological scenes set against a backdrop of glades or wooded landscapes, a genre he mastered for nearly thirty years. He had, however, begun his career with seascapes in the style of Joseph Vernet, which he exhibited during his first appearances at the Salon from 1791 onwards. He also produced portraits inspired by Greuze, and several paintings of ancient or modern history which he primarily exhibited at the Salon. Vallin is, in a sense, the successor to the bacchanalia and gallant pastorals of Jacques-Philippe Caresme (1734–1796), but with a style that is distinctly less Rubenesque and more neoclassical, even historical, in keeping with his era, and which he borrowed from artists such as Prud’hon and even David; his paintings display a lovely freshness of colour and a genuine grace in the faces and poses of the figures.
