Description
Attributed to Pierre ANDRIEU (1821–1892) Portrait of a young woman in profile Graphite drawing, with a red ‘E.D.’ stamp at the bottom, towards the centre. (Punctures). 13.9 x 12.5 cm (the sheet) Bears the stamp of Delacroix’s studio, known as the ‘Andrieu stamp’. This is the painter Pierre Andrieu (1821–1892), the pupil and loyal collaborator of Eugène Delacroix, who bequeathed to him, amongst other things, his original drawings for the Salon de la Paix at the Hôtel de Ville (a work that has since been destroyed), plus 15,000 francs, as well as sketches of the chapel at the Church of St Sulpice, a reclining lion, etc. Andrieu kept this legacy throughout his life; he also acquired, at Delacroix’s estate sale, a number of other sketches by his master. After his death, his heirs, presumably acting in good faith, had a new stamp made (formerly L.838), which was then affixed to drawings by Andrieu—mistakenly taken for works by Delacroix—and to genuine Delacroix works, which had become mixed in with the Andrieu pieces.*
