Konstantin Makovsky is one of the most famous Russian painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He began his career as a member of the Peredvizhniki movement (1863–1923), a group that presented a realistic vision of rural Russia. He went on to become one of the masters of historical painting, depicting in masterful scenes featuring numerous figures not only Russia’s memorable tragedies but also the splendour of traditional costumes, ornaments and settings. He was Tsar Alexander II’s favourite painter.
Makovski painted a portrait of the Tsar, as well as those of several princes from the imperial entourage and numerous portraits of women, which served as a pretext for depicting the sumptuous traditional costumes.
Our portrait illustrates his very virginal vision of the young Russian girl: a pure gaze with crystalline pupils, and a pearly complexion that conveys the innocence of the soul. His masterful brushwork enables him to capture the silky texture and delicacy of the lace, the freshwater pearl necklace, and the velvety petals of the two roses, which echo the floral motifs on the silk of the dress.
