Description
Russian chest known as a ‘Teremok’. Wood, iron, tinted mica and polychrome decoration. Sloping lid with double hinges. The interior is decorated with foliage and interlacing motifs in bright colours. The stained mica decoration is protected by openwork ironwork. Hinged handles on the sides. The locks complete with their wrought-iron keys. Russia, late 17th or early 18th century. H_40.5 cm W_43.5 cm D_35 cm. This type of chest echoes the architectural form of an ancient Russian tower house, known as a ‘terem’, which served as a women’s quarters. The Teremok has two lids and one compartment. The upper section was designed as a secret compartment and could be secured with a separate key.
