Description
Thawan DUCHANEE (Thai painter, 1939–2014). Horse. Oil on paper, signed lower left. H_77 cm W_108 cm In a modern silver frame. Note: Thai painter, sculptor and architect, born on 27 September 1939 in Chiang Rai. Trained at the Pohchang Academy and then at Silpakorn University under Silpa Bhirasri, he subsequently studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam from 1964 to 1968. On his return to Thailand, he caused a scandal with his unconventional vision of Buddhism, populated by Buddhas, demons and beasts with large black swirls; several of his paintings were destroyed in 1971. In 1977, Count Hatzfeldt invited him to paint at his castle in Germany. His first exhibition in Japan took place in Fukuoka in 1990. He was appointed National Artist of Thailand and received the Fukuoka Prize (Arts and Culture) in 2001.
