Description
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Shell (beetle?). Engobed terracotta, known as ‘sigillata’. Signed and dated (19)81 on the base. H_34 cm W_15 cm D_14 cm Provenance: a private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the boundary between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates pieces made from sigillata clay, which are first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to achieve a particular texture and crackling effect, lending depth and uniqueness to his works.
