Description
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004).
Large embracing couple.
Double vase in engobed terracotta, known as ‘sigillata’.
Signed.
H_26 cm W_14.5 cm D_17 cm
Provenance: a private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle.
Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates pieces made from sigillata clay, which are first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to emphasise their texture and crackling, lending depth and uniqueness to his works.
