Description
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004).
A plump figure.
Engobed terracotta, known as ‘sigillata’.
H_14 cm W_8.5 cm D_8 cm, crackling on the shoulder
Provenance: a private Occitan collection, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle.
Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates sigillata pieces, first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to achieve their texture and crackling, which lend depth and uniqueness to his works.
