Description
Wang KEPING (sculptor of Chinese origin, born in 1949). Reclining Woman – 1991. Carved wood. H_62 cm W_148 cm D_59 cm Exhibition: Hôtel de Ville, Paris, May–July 1992. Bibliography: Wang Keping, Frederic Bleuet, Peter Briggs, Sculptures, Hôtel de Ville, Paris (reproduced). We would like to thank the Wang Keping Studio for the information they have provided. A certificate of authenticity accompanies this work. Note: Born in China in 1949, Wang Keping was one of the founding members of the dissident group ‘The Stars’ (Xingxing), alongside Ai Weiwei and Ma Desheng; an avant-garde movement that emerged in Beijing in the late 1970s, in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. Forced into exile in France in 1984, Wang established himself there as a leading figure in contemporary Chinese sculpture. Working almost exclusively in wood, Wang Keping developed a minimalist and sensual sculptural language – influenced by ancient Chinese aesthetics, European Expressionism, and a form of organic abstraction inherited from Brancusi.
