Description
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Large poppy. Sculpture in engobed terracotta, known as ‘sigillata’. Signed and dated 7.3.(19)90 on the base. H_45 cm W_24 cm D_10.5 cm Provenance: a private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the line between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates works in sigillata clay, which are first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to achieve a particular texture and crackling effect, lending depth and uniqueness to his pieces.
