Description
Pierre BAYLE (1945–2004). Flared box, on a slender foot. Engobed terracotta, known as ‘sigillata’, signed and dated (19)81. H_21 cm D_39 cm (with lid), cracks and chips in the glaze Provenance: a private collection in Occitania, belonging to a friend of Pierre Bayle. Note: A ceramist from the Languedoc region, trained in Castelnaudary, Pierre Bayle combined traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde experimentation, establishing ceramics as an art form in its own right, straddling the boundary between utilitarian and decorative objects. He creates works in sigillata clay, first engobed and then smoked, with surfaces worked to achieve texture and crackling, which lend depth and uniqueness to his pieces.
