CHINA – 17th century A set of two paintings, in ink and colours on silk, depicting scenes from hell: the King of Hell sits in his palace judging the wicked, surrounded by his servants and subordinates. The wicked are subjected to cruel tortures and will subsequently be reincarnated as animals. In the bottom right-hand corner of each painting are the names of the donors: “the faithful [?] Jishan and the faithful [?] Wanyou”. (Their surnames have been blacked out with black ink.)
