Description
GEORGES JOUVE (1910–1964) CERAMIST – MARCEL ASSELBUR ASSEMBLER/PUBLISHER ‘Untitled’ – the ceramic component design created around [1952–55]; our wall lights produced around 1955–1960, the only two known examples to date A rare and significant pair of wall lights. The large central motifs are made of black-glazed ceramic and are based on designs originally known as lamp base models, mounted upside down. The lower part of each wall light is fitted with a tubular brass elbow; whilst the upper part features a tubular brass shaft topped by a mounting sphere designed to hold the top of the lampshade and the wall mounting bracket (missing) – these elements are set in black-stained plaster. Each wall light is complete with its original trimmed lampshade and fitted with a separate wall bracket (painted white, not original) in the shape of an inverted ‘L’, which holds a double-socket bar and accommodates the lamp’s shaft at the top. Each piece is signed with the monogram A. P. (interlaced letters) for Apollon, known as the ‘Alpha’ mark, engraved on the set-in section at the top of the ceramic body that holds the lamp shaft. Height of ceramic body only: 39 cm Total height: 72 cm Lampshades: Height: 21 cm – Length: 39 cm A chip around the edge of the upper part of one of the decorative ceramic motifs; the wall brackets are entirely painted in non-original white.
