Galère Réale means that the ship belonged to the King. The flagship of the French galleys called La Réale therefore flew the flags of the King and his admiral. The galley was the latest form of rowing warship with 7 men at each oar: the crew of convicts totalled 427 men. Overall length: 170 feet (55.95 m). Width: 21 feet (7.74 m). 61 thwarts. 61 oars: 2 lateen sails; 5 cannons, 1 steed and 4 bastards: 12 pierriers. The tree of trinquet is planted on the side of the courseies the stern is covered with a tent and the tendelet supported by 2 spars. The sculptures are attributed to Pierre Puget. Brief description of the 1/75th scale model
It took some 2,500 hours to build between January 1970 and December 1971.
Making one oar requires 34 operations, i.e. 2,074 manipulations for the 61 oars. The flags, pennants, flames, pavesades, todes, mouquets and tendelet are made of silk and the gold paintwork is done by hand. There are almost 900 heraldic fleurs-de-lis, and the reduced sculptures took up half the working hours.
