-------
Irène RÉNO (1884–1953) (known as Irena Hassenberg) was a painter and draughtswoman of Polish origin. She is considered one of the most important and original figures of the École de Paris, as noted by Sylwia Zientek in *Polki na Montparnasse (Polish Women Painters of Montparnasse)*, Agora, Warsaw, 2021
She arrived in Paris in 1905 and quickly gained artistic recognition. From 1907 onwards, Réno began exhibiting her works at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon de la Section d’Or.
Close to Cubist circles through her social circle, notably through her relationship with the painter Alcide Le Beau, she frequented the artists of the Puteaux group whilst developing her own personal style. Guillaume Apollinaire praised her talent after seeing her paintings in 1910, exhibited in the Passage Ronsin in Paris alongside those of Van Dongen, Matisse, Marie Laurencin and Bourdelle. She worked not only in Paris but also in Corsica, the Basque Country (Biarritz), the Gulf of Morbihan, Normandy and the United States, where she travelled in the 1920s.
Irène Réno’s works are now held in numerous museum collections in France and abroad, notably at the Musée des Années 30 in Boulogne-Billancourt, the Musée de Dieppe, the Musée du Havre and the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme in Paris.
