Departure of the Terre-Neuvas c. 1937–1938
Oil on canvas, signed lower right, monogrammed, titled and marked ‘Saint-Malo’ on the reverse, with craquelure
65 x 81 cm
For nearly three centuries, until the early 1950s, French fishermen set sail every year for the island of Newfoundland off the coast of Canada to fish for cod. The sailors departing from the port of Saint-Malo were thus known as ‘Les Terre-neuvas ’.
Compare with the paintings reproduced in the first volume of the catalogue raisonné of Émile Othon Friesz’s paintings by Robert Martin and Odile Aittouarès, Éditions Aittouarès, Paris, 1995, nos. 135, 152 and 161.
