Description
Alphonse De NEUVILLE
The Trial of the Prince of Talmont in Laval (inscribed on a label: War in the Vendée – Cathelineau fled to Nantes)
Oil on canvas, signed lower left (minor imperfections), 71 x 85
Note: “No Cathelineau was tried in Nantes. Joseph, the youngest of the siblings, was arrested in Chalonnes during the very first week of the war because he was wearing the Sacred Heart on his chest; he was then taken to Angers, where he was immediately guillotined at the Place du Ralliement following a most summary trial. He climbed the scaffold singing a Marian hymn: ‘I place my trust, O Virgin, in your help.’ He was 19 years old. The most likely explanation is that this was a mistake resulting from confusion with a man named La Cathelinière, a junior officer in Charrette’s army (whom Charrette strongly criticised, deeming him too cruel in battle), who was in fact arrested and tried in Nantes.”
