René I QUILLIVIC (1879–1969). Portrait of a young Breton woman wearing a headdress. Carved white marble, signed. Height: 44 cm – Width: 30 cm – Depth: 20 cm Note: René Quillivic undertook the Compagnons du Devoir’s tour of France as a journeyman carpenter, during which he learnt French. He then turned to sculpture and went to train at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1905, he worked in Antonin Mercié’s studio. In 1907, he won the gold medal at the Salon des Beaux-Arts with his group sculpture *Les Sonneurs bretons*. The following year, his work *The Embroiderer from Pont-l’Abbé* earned him a scholarship to travel to North Africa and Italy. His studio was located at 73 Boulevard de Montmorency in Paris, along the Petite Ceinture railway line. René Quillivic died in Paris on 8 April 1969. A versatile artist – sculptor, engraver, painter and ceramist – his art was deeply influenced by his native Brittany, as evidenced by this head wearing the traditional Bigouden headdress.
