Description
BAILLE (Edouard) (1814–1888) (Attributed to) “Family scene in the suburbs of Besançon”, oil on canvas, 114×146 cm (some restoration), in its period frame.
The scene depicts the Demolombe family, Besançon-based cloth merchants, probably around 1850–60, whose shop was situated on the Grande Rue opposite the Rue d’Anvers.
The painting was created in front of their country house in the Saint-Claude district of Besançon, where the INSPE of the Marie and Louis PASTEUR University now stands, on the corner of Boulevard Churchill and Avenue de Montjoux.
Pictured are Mr and Mrs Demolombe and their five children, from right to left: Jules, who would take over the family business; Pauline; Émile (the father); Clarisse, the second daughter; Mrs Demolombe (the mother); Julie, the third daughter, and finally Émile, who would probably become a notary’s clerk or a lawyer. In the foreground is their dog, waiting for someone to throw the stick for him.
This painting has been reproduced in the book by Lionel Estavoyer and Stéphane Dondicol, *Besançon, Côté Parcs&Jardins*, published by Editions Sékoya
(reproduced on the cover and on page 3 of the catalogue)
