DE BAECQUE et Associés - Lyon

Estimate €300 - €600
Description
Large dish Made of pewter. Circular in shape. Rich moulded decoration covering the entire piece, with, at the centre, Adam and Eve, naked, in the Garden of Eden, and the serpent coiled around the Tree of Knowledge. They are accompanied in the background by Minerva and allegories of the liberal arts: astronomy, rhetoric (sic), music, grammar (sic) and arithmetic (sic). The rim depicts the twelve principal Roman emperors. These allegorical figures are inspired by Etienne Delaune, the famous engraver and ornamental artist of the French Renaissance. The captions for the liberal arts, written in French, rule out a German origin for this model, as such captions are always in Latin. No hallmark or countermark Workshop in Lyon or Franche-Comté, late 16th century D. 46.5 cm Damage, restoration and significant oxidation. A suspension ring brazed to the reverse. Ref: ‘Les étains de la collection Riblent’ by Robert Forrer. Strasbourg, 1905, which describes and reproduces an example of this model.
