Description
Guild jug
Made of pewter. A truncated conical body with bevelled sides, resting on three lion-shaped feet in the round. A flat, recessed lid, topped by a lion holding a shield. An ‘S’-shaped, notched thumb ring and a flowing ribbon handle. Richly engraved decoration, featuring architectural niches, each housing a saintly figure, including Saint Barbara, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Apollonia, Saint Lucy, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the Virgin Mary and Christ (among others). The rim of the lid bears the engraved inscription ‘TU ES PASTOR BONUS // PASCE AGNOS GRACIS MEI’. The base of the body is decorated with a series of coats of arms. The coat of arms on the lid bears the name ‘JACOB KOCH’ and the date ‘1570’, a tub, crossed rods and a jester’s shoe pierced by an arrow. It bears several hallmarks (including, I believe, a rose on the inside, though I was unable to open it), amongst which are ‘ETAIN’ in a cartouche, ‘SN 95%’ and the potter’s mark ‘CT’?
