Description
19. A fine and rare Saxon enamelled Royal armorial beaker from the Dresden Court Cellar, Heidelbach Glassworks (Erzgebirge), dated 1688 Of attractive small size, the gently tapering cylindrical form brightly painted with coat of arms of Johann Georg III, beneath an electoral crown and flanked by scrolled mantling, inscribed 'I.G.D.D.H.Z./ S.I.C.V.B.C' above and 'Hofkellerey Dreßden/ 1688' below, the sides and reverse with formal motifs of swirls and dots in white, blue, yellow and red, the rim with bands of white enamel dots, the applied trailed foot with white dashes, 11.2cm high Provenance German Private Collection With Kunstkammer Georg Laue, Munich, 2022 Johann Georg III (1647-1691) was Elector of Saxony from 1680 until his death in 1691. The initials around the rim stand for 'Johann Georg der Dritte Herzog zu Sachsen, Jülich, Cleve und Berg, Churfürst'. The inscription attests to the fact that this glass comes from the Dresden Hofkellerei (Court Cellar) and was made for use at the princely table. Glasses of this type are discussed in detail by Axel von Saldern, German Enameled Glass, 1965, pp.202-12. A Humpen in the Historischen Museum Dresden bearing the same arms and also inscribed for the Dresden Hofkellerei, dated 1681, is illustrated by Gisela Haase, Sächsiches Glas, 1988, p.308, no.61. Another example in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, dated 1683, is illustrated by Robert Schmidt, Das Glas, 1912, p.195, fig.105. Compare also to the passglas dated 1693 for his successor, Johann George IV, illustrated by Axel von Saldern, op. cit., p.356, no.76, now in the Corning Museum of Glass (inv. no.57.3.131).
