Estimate €3,000 - €5,000
Description
39. A carved marble allegorical bust of winter Workshop of Orazio Marinali (1643-1720), Northern Italy, early 18th century Standing on a marble base; restorations, 22cm wide, 14cm deep, 35cm high (8 1/2in wide, 5 1/2in deep, 13 1/2in high) Orazio Marinali (1643-1720) was the most celebrated member of a family of sculptors active in the Veneto during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Trained under Giusto Le Court, he soon attracted the patronage of both ecclesiastical and private collectors, for whom he frequently produced series of garden sculptures and busts in stone and marble. The present bust exemplifies Marinali's enduring fascination with theatrical facial types, expressed through the striking features and heightened characterisation of the sitter.
