This work depicts the festivities held by the city of Strasbourg in honour of Louis XV's visit in 1744. After recovering from a bad fever contracted while leading his armies at Metz, the king was welcomed by twelve hundred cavalry and infantry troops amid music from trumpets, timpani, oboes and hunting horns. Celebrations continued over several days, prompting François-Joseph de Klinglin, Strasbourg's royal lender, to commission this album as a lasting record of the event. Copies were later bound by the king's Royal Binder, Padeloup, in luxurious calfskin or red morocco leather with elaborate gilt decoration and distributed among members of the royal court.
