The deaths of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich and Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna marked the end of one of the most prominent Romanov households in exile. The Grand Duke died on 5 January 1929 at Antibes, France, after several years of declining health. His death was widely mourned throughout the Russian émigré world, where he had long been regarded as a symbol of Imperial Russia and, for many monarchists, a potential leader around whom the anti-Bolshevik movement could unite. Condolences poured in from Russian communities across Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, and the Americas, reflecting his immense prestige among former officers, clergy, and émigré organizations. Grand Duchess Anastasia survived her husband by almost seven years, spending her final years in relative seclusion on the French Riviera. She died on 15 November 1935 in Cap d'Antibes, at a time when hopes for the restoration of the monarchy had largely faded and the Russian émigré community was adapting to the reality of permanent exile. Their deaths coincided with a broader transition within the Russian diaspora, as the generation that had known Imperial Russia gradually passed away, leaving the preservation of its memory and traditions to a younger generation born or raised outside the homeland.
