Max Verstappen's 2021 season was a breakthrough year, as he emerged as Lewis Hamilton's biggest challenger and fought the seven-time champion in one of the closest and most dramatic title battles in F1 history. Verstappen won 10 races, including a run of three consecutive victories in France and Austria, and repeatedly traded the championship lead with Hamilton throughout the season. After the two arrived at the final race in Abu Dhabi level on 369.5 points, Hamilton appeared to have the title secured after leading for most of the race, but a late Safety Car gave Verstappen one final opportunity. He switched to fresh soft tyres and, on the last lap, overtook Hamilton into Turn 5 in a tense wheel-to-wheel fight, holding him off to win both the race and his first Formula 1 World Championship, finishing the season on 395.5 points to Hamilton's 387.5.
