French school. Ile-de-France. Romanesque. Second quarter of the 12th century. 'Head of the Apostle' Sandstone sculpture.  16 x 9 x 9 cm.   As we read in the encyclopaedia of the Romanesque in Galicia, in the file of Professor Gerardo Boto Varela: 2this sculpture of a head wears a completely continuous wavy hairstyle along the entire spherical perimeter without a parting.  It has unusual, slanting eyes with the iris marked by a slit and slight incision in the tear duct, profiled eyelids, high and very fine superciliary arches, a small, straight nose, rounded cheekbones, full and fleshy lips, moustache and beard with long locks, frontal gaze and an apathetic expression.'   Provenance: Private collection. Spain.   Bibliography: Reproduced in ‘La Enciclopedia del Románico en Galicia’ vol. dedicated to A Coruña, p. 395-396. Text by Prof. Gerardo Boto Varela.
