Description
Catalan School. Gothic. 14th century.
'Saint Mary Magdalene'
Carved, polychrome and gilded wooden sculpture.
85 x 26 x 21,5 cm.
Attached is the conservation report from I.C.R. (Investigación, Conservación, Restauración de obras de arte) (Research, Conservation, and Restoration of Works of Art), which records its formal characteristics and its state of conservation, hereby transcribed:
'An original sculpture carved in walnut wood, with remnants of original tempera polychromy (ermine band and flesh tones) and a later, non-original, overall oil repaint.
It represents St Mary Magdalene dressed in rich garments, wearing a diadem in her hair, and holding the ointment jar (a usual iconographic attribute).
Rigid and stylised, its beauty lies in the elegance of its refined forms. The classical cut of the head is undeniable, fully inspired by Roman art. As if it were a funerary sculpture, it combines Italian and French influences in its Mannerism.
It is a work of the Catalan school from the late fourteenth century, whose reading of the polychromy is hindered by extensive overpainting, yet sculpturally it appears to have come from a fine local workshop.'
