Juan de Juanes was a Spanish painter regarded as one of the most prominent figures of the Spanish Renaissance and the true master of the Valencian artistic scene in the mid-sixteenth century. He trained in the workshop of his father, Vicente Macip, who was already active in 1493 and was recognized as one of the great Valencian masters of the first half of the sixteenth century.
Juan de Juanes created the original model for the portrait of the Virgin.
On the perimeter of the frame, we read the following painted text: “O VIRGO BENEDICTA SVPER OMNES FAEMINAS, QVE ANGELOS VINCIS PVRITATE, QVE OMNES SANCTOS SVPERAS PIETATE HILARIVS.” Translated into English: “Oh Blessed Virgin above all women, who surpasses the angels in purity and all the Saints in gracious piety.”
