Description
Felipe Diricksen (El Escorial, 1590 - Madrid, 1679) 'Saint John the Baptist' Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in 16??. 134 x 93,5 cm.   Felipe Diricksen was an important Spanish painter of Flemish origin, son of Rodrigo Diriksen or Rodrigo de Holanda and grandson of Antón van Wyngaerde, also known as Antonio de las Viñas.   As reported by the Royal Academy of History, 'within the orbit of early naturalism, strongly influenced by the iconography and types of Escorial Mannerist painting,' he devoted himself mainly to religious painting and portraiture, both of kings such as Philip III —whom he portrayed in 1620, a portrait whose whereabouts are unknown, and again in 1635— and of illustrious families such as the Unceta family from Éibar. According to the Prado Museum, 'in 1627 he unsuccessfully applied to fill the vacancy of court painter left by the death of Bartolomé González. From that moment on, his painting distanced itself from the courtly world and focused on religious themes,' a fact that suggests that the Saint John we present was made after that date. Among his most important commissions, both the Prado and the RAH highlight the paintings of the altarpiece of the Chapel of Mosén Rubí in Bracamonte, Ávila, from 1629, influenced by the style of the royal painter Eugenio Cajés. The Prado Museum preserves the 'Christ Carrying the Cross Contemplated by Mary and the Christian Soul' (inv. P008236), a canvas that was part of this group of religious works.   Always linked to the courtly world, 'in several studies it has been stated that he came to Spain before 1627 to work at the Court, but in reality, in light of the documents, it has been proven that he was born in El Escorial and must have been trained in the environment of court artists serving Philip II and Philip III, alongside his father and grandfather, being an excellent example of the family-based system of artistic training'; thus states the RAH.   Reference bibliography: - Museo del Prado.
