CHINA, Yongle reign, dated 1418 A very rare carved ivory seal with a yellow patina; the square-shaped seal face bears the four-character mark ‘Chongxiu fajiao’. The handle takes the form of a Buddhist wheel known as the ‘Wheel of Dharma’, circular in shape, with its centre adorned with a lotus flower, which in turn rests on a double lotus-shaped base. The upper part of the matrix bears the inscriptions ‘Ci Lama Zheba suonan jiancan’ (𧶽刺麻着巴镆南監參, ‘Lama Zheba Sonam Jianzhan’) and, on the other, the mark ‘Yongle shiliunian zhengyue ri’ (永樂十六年正月日, ‘First month of the sixteenth year of Emperor Yongle’s reign, corresponding to the year 1418’).
