IMPORTANT TAPESTRY: ‘NOBLE IN CEREMONIAL DRESS’, 19TH CENTURY A wool tapestry in the style of the works of the Royal Manufactory of Windsor, featuring the typical colour palette of the Victorian era, with ochre, gold and blue hues that are highly characteristic of the dyes used in the late 19th century to imitate medieval pieces. The subject of the tapestry echoes the works of Herbert Bone, who created designs that served as guides for the weavers. There is a coat of arms in the top left-hand corner, reminiscent of the ‘House of Grimaldi’. The presence of the ‘Monaco’ coat of arms on this tapestry can be explained by the history and business model of the Royal Windsor Tapestry Manufactory (1876–1890). Dimensions: approx. 282 x 395 cm. In its current condition, small areas are unstitched, with signs of damp. The Windsor manufactory, operating under the patronage of the British royal family (Queen Victoria and her son Prince Leopold), worked exclusively for the high nobility, European royal families and wealthy collectors of the Victorian era. It was customary for the workshops to use an existing artist’s cartoon and, on commission, incorporate the purchaser’s coat of arms into one corner to personalise the work.
