Estimate €6,000 - €8,000
Description
An Egyptian-style clock in gilded bronze. It depicts a woman with bare breasts, wearing the Pschent, the royal headdress of the Pharaonic period, and featuring an enamelled dial with Roman numerals. It is signed ‘BAUSSE’, at Le Méridien, Boulevard d’Antin, Paris. Empire period. Height: 52 cm. This clock bears witness to the major influence of the Egyptian campaign on French decorative arts in the early 19th century. The expedition led by Bonaparte between 1798 and 1801 sparked a veritable craze for ancient Egypt, whose motifs and figures were widely adopted in the French decorative arts. The original plaster model of this clock was directly inspired by a sculpture created in 1788 by Louis-Simoon Boizot (1743–1809) for the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. This model was cast in bronze some ten years later by the engraver François Rémond, illustrating the spread of this design in bronze art during the Directoire period and the early Empire. A comparable example is held at the Museum of Decorative Arts in PRAGUE. Bibliography: C.
