Originally from the Netherlands, Jacques Van Oostenryk, better known as Dautriche, arrived in Paris around 1740, where he began working as a journeyman. He first set up shop on Rue Traversière, before moving to Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the heart of Parisian cabinetmaking. There he quickly built a solid reputation and received numerous commissions for the various royal households.
On his death, his workshop was taken over by his wife and then by his son, Thomas Jacques, thus ensuring the continuity of the family’s craftsmanship.
Whilst Dautriche produced a few pieces of Louis XV-style furniture, he distinguished himself above all in his designs in the Transition and Louis XVI styles. He excelled particularly in the use of veneers, notably rosewood and mahogany, which he worked with elegance and finesse, producing refined pieces characteristic of late 18th-century taste.
