First edition of the Nuremberg Chronicle.
Composed in Latin by the physician and humanist Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514), the Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most important German books of the 15th century and remains undoubtedly the most famous of the incunabula, not least because of the scale of its editorial project and the quality of its production.
The work presents itself as a universal chronicle of world history, from the Creation right up to the second half of the 15th century. In it, the author discusses the founding of the Church, secular history, antiquity, historical and legendary events, discoveries, and so on.
Printed in Gothic type in two columns, the edition is illustrated with 1,809 portraits, subjects, maps and city views, including those of Germany, which are remarkable for their accuracy, executed by Michel Wolgemuth, Dürer’s master, and by Wilhelm Pleydenwurff; two double-page maps, a world map and a map of Northern and Central Europe are included in the pagination.
A very attractive copy, with fine margins, preserved in a morocco slipcase marked ‘A. Oldach & Son Holland P.A.’.
Engraved coat-of-arms bookplates of Thomas Streatfeild of Chart’s Edge and Peter Hardy.
Minor marginal or corner repairs to folios LXXII, CLXXI, CLXXXIII and CLXXXVII. Restored hinges; slight scuffing to the binding.
