Description
THE PARANGON OF SHORT STORIES, Honest and delightful to all those who wish to see and hear new and entertaining things under the guise of merriment […]. Lyon, [Denys de Harsy for] Romain Morin, 1531. 2 parts in one small 8vo volume, havana morocco, double framing of three gilt fillets, the central one adorned with ironwork at the corners and in the spandrels, decorated spine, the panels adorned with a quatrefoil on a background of mille-points, red morocco lining decorated with a lace pattern of gilded foliage, double endpapers of comb-patterned paper, edges gilt on marbled paper (Trautz-Bauzonnet). A very rare first edition of this anthology of tragic, humorous or moral short stories. Printed in round type, it is adorned with 66 woodcut vignettes, some of which are repeated; titles set within an engraved frame, the first printed in red and black. The first part of the book contains 47 short stories drawn from Boccaccio, Poggio, Lorenzo Valla and the popular collection *Till Eulenspiegel*. The second part, entitled *Les Parolles Joyeuses & Dicts Memorables des Nobles & saiges hommes anciens*, begins with continuous pagination on folio 65 with a separate title page. A superb copy in a charming Trautz-Bauzonnet lined binding. It comes from the Lebeuf de Montgermont library (1876, no. 700) and was listed in the *Bulletin Morgand* (no. 7720). Minor restoration to four folios, with no missing pages. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
