NICOLAY (Nicolas de). [The First Four Books of Voyages and Pilgrimages to the East. Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1568.] Folio, flexible vellum with gilt decoration of the period. A very incomplete copy of one of the finest books ever published on the Ottoman Empire. Present are folio **2 (chapters from Books I and II), the 8 pages of the preface, folio ***3 (chapters from Books III and IV), pp. 9–110, 115–140 and 145–178, and 41 (out of 60) intaglio-engraved plates depicting costumes. (Baudrier, vol. IX, pp. 318–319.) The plates are in period colours. Numerous soiled leaves, water stains, repairs to several leaves and plates (some with losses and lined).
