Description
ANDROUET DU CERCEAU (Jacques). A Book on Architecture. Containing various plans and elevations of buildings for lords, gentlemen and others who wish to build in the countryside; some of these include designs for courtyards, with their specific amenities, as well as gardens and orchards. Paris, for Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, 1582. Folio, marbled half-calf with small vellum corners, covers bound in marbled paper, plain spine, red title label, untrimmed (modern binding). First edition of the last of the three Books on Architecture by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau (1510–1584), also known as the Book on Architecture for the Countryside, composed and published as a continuation of the first two volumes, which appeared in 1559 and 1561. The illustrations consist of 52 copper-engraved plates of plans and elevations relating to 38 building projects, preceded by an explanatory text of 26 folios. Brunet and Geymüller (Les Du Cerceau..., p. 312) cite a 1572 edition which does not exist, no doubt due to confusion with this one. The copy is slightly soiled, with a tear or split—with no missing material—restored on the title page, in the margin of folio A4 and on six plates. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
