Description
APULEIUS. *The Love of Cupid and Psyche, Mother of Voluptas*. Paris, n.d. [c. 1590]. In-4 folio, lemon-coloured morocco, double gilt rule, decorated spine, red and green trim, interior lace (Lortic fils). A very fine collection, adorned with an architectural title page featuring effigies of Venus and Psyche on a pedestal, and comprising 32 copperplate engravings by Léonard Gaultier. These prints reproduce woodcuts from Denis Janot’s 8vo edition (1546), the various models for which date back to the school of Raphael. The final plate is neither signed by Gaultier nor dated, suggesting that it was printed slightly after 1586, the presumed date of the previous print run (Brun, p. 113; Mortimer, *French Books*, no. 34). The series is preceded by a title page printed in black and red, entitled *Les Amours de Cupidon et de Psiché*, apparently from the 18th century. Fine binding by Lortic fils. Worn joints. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
