Description
OVID. Metamorphoses. Or: A marvellous and curious description of humans, animals and other creatures… Frankfurt am Main, Johann Gaurn, 1609. In-4, hardcover in vellum with overcover (contemporary binding). A fine Gothic edition printed in two columns, the title printed in red and black and set within a wood-engraved frame, illustrated with numerous woodcut vignettes within the text. The translation, by Georg Wickram of Colmar, was first published in 1545 in Mainz. Scorched paper, as was often the case with books from across the Rhine of that period. Minor worm damage in the lower margin of the last two leaves and on the opposite endpaper. The endpapers are missing; there is a tear in the spine; the upper hinge is partially split with a severed rib attachment. Expert: Mr Dominique Courvoisier
